College History

1986 July: Gateway College was founded as Community Professional Medical Careers Ltd. (CPMC).

 

1986 September: Equipment was purchased, premises were leased, curriculum was developed and the first classes commenced.

 

1989 March: Continued growth led to the incorporation of CPMC. 

 

1993 May: An additional adjacent 1,500 square feet of office space was leased.

 

1997: Planning to offer additional courses unrelated to the medical field, we changed the name of the college to Gateway Careers Inc. (GCI).

 

1999 January: The college obtained accreditation from the Private Career Training Institutions Agency of British Columbia (formerly known as PPSEC) to demonstrate the high quality of our education.

 

2006 June: Vancouver campus relocated to the three story building on 395 West Broadway to accommodate increasing number of students, and modified the name to Gateway College (GC). Our proud Long-Term Care Aide (LTCA) Diploma program with ongoing upgrades to the curriculum has remained the most reputable program in the School of Health Care.

 

2006 October: For the first time, the College opened the door for international students. Nursing Assistant and Communication Diploma program and Hospitality Management Diploma program as well as Resident Care Attendant (RCA) Diploma program were offered for them.

 

2008-2009: 971 students enrolled.

 

2009 June:  For our LTCA and RCA graduates who wish to further their education to become Licensed Practical Nurse, the College started to deliver LPN Access Diploma program.

 

2011 February: Gateway College has obtained EQA (BC's Education Quality Assurance) Designation.

 

2011 April: Updated our Resident Care Attendant program curriculum to meet the new BC Provincial Curriculum, and changed the program title to Health Care Assistant.

 

2011 August: The College was approved to deliver Health Care Assistant Diploma program online (blended learning) for the first time in British Columbia.

 

2013 February: A new Health Care Assistant - Access program is introduced for students who have prior learning or working experience.

 

2013 November: A new Surrey satellite location is opened to accommodate students travelling from Fraser Valley or interior BC on 201-10114 King George Blvd.

 

2013 December: All Health Care Assistant program and its variation programs are delivered in dual mode: traditional mode (in-class) or blended mode (in-class + online) to offer convenience.

 

2015 February: A new Health Care Specialized Studies is introduced for individual course delivery including Introduction to Practice. The courses are available in both traditional mode and distance education mode.
